Cirrus Logic Targets Market Growth in Digital Entertainment

Leveraging Audio and Video Expertise to Provide Platform Solutions for Next-Generation DVD Markets—Players, Recorders, Receivers and Portables

HONG KONG – Hong Kong Electronics Fair – October 14, 2002 – Focusing on accelerated growth in the digital entertainment electronics market, Cirrus Logic (Nasdaq: CRUS) today unveiled a programmable DVD platform strategy targeting the world’s leading manufacturers of consumer entertainment equipment. Cirrus’ platform strategy is focused on providing versatile silicon and software solutions for such markets as DVD players, DVD receivers, portable DVD devices and the expected high-growth market of DVD recorders and DVD-based personal video recorders (PVRs). This strategy is designed to help manufacturers get to market faster with cost-effective, proven DVD-enabled solutions.

“Now that DVD content is widely available, the opportunity exists for retailers and equipment manufacturers to optimize profitability by driving fragmentation of the DVD player market into a wide range of DVD-enabled sectors. Cirrus’ platform solutions are based on a leadership breadth of audio, video, and systems integration capabilities to help facilitate the growth of a number of value-added segments,” said David French, president and chief executive officer of Cirrus Logic. “By using our upgradeable solutions, our customers will be able to cost effectively address numerous price points and market segments with the same basic design, thereby reducing overall development expenditures and accelerating the addition of key features. This will allow our customers to focus greater resources in marketing, branding and retail distribution relationships while effectively addressing the rapidly segmenting digital consumer hardware market.”

Cirrus’ strategy incorporates solutions for today’s DVD player market and emerging DVD recording, receiver and portable markets, exemplified by the newly announced CS98200 integrated audio/video decoder solution. Moreover, Cirrus plans to aggressively target market share growth in the DVD player market with a comprehensive, cost-effective single-board platform solution that utilizes Cirrus’ unique optical servo and video decoder technology with interconnected operating system software.

“Cirrus has focused its efforts to be at the forefront of the digital entertainment semiconductor market, providing solutions in not only today’s DVD player market but also the next-generation of DVD devices that will give consumers greater convenience and control over their digital content and entertainment experience,” French said. “Through internal development and acquisition we have established a unique set of audio, video and software skills. We plan to use our leadership breadth of capabilities to address the volume markets at low system cost, to enable our customers to offer exciting new value propositions now that DVD technology has come of age.”

Consumer entertainment analysts foresee digital video recording as the next big DVD growth segment. Digital video recording will allow consumers to replace their VCRs with devices that provide hard disk drive-based (PVR) and/or DVD recordable, media-based content record capabilities. According to market research, the ability to digitally record broadcast television and other digital content to a hard drive or DVD media is a key feature that will persuade non-DVD owners to purchase a DVD device, as well as get current DVD owners to upgrade. In fact, 80 percent of DVD owners indicated they were very or somewhat likely to replace their current DVD player with a unit that has record functionality (source: eBrain Consumer Research, September 2001).

“DVD recordable units that record to a DVD disc or hard drive are available now, but prices are still too high for widespread consumer adoption,” said Terry Ritchie, vice president of Video Marketing. “Cirrus’ strength in overall semiconductor system integration will allow us to develop comprehensive platform solutions with a reduced bill of materials for the OEM. In fact, by 2003 our digital video recording solutions could help reduce overall semiconductor systems costs by up to 30 percent. That will help bring down device costs and rapidly spur consumer adoption of digital recording devices.”

Today, Cirrus’ CS98000 video decoder and CS92288 encoder solutions are being designed into digital video recording devices and are helping to lower costs for units during the next several months.

Another emerging growth segment is the DVD receiver market, where Cirrus is leveraging its worldwide market share leadership in the audio/video receiver market to give OEMs comprehensive solutions to design and manufacture devices that are a combination DVD player and audio/video receiver. These systems are often sold to consumers with speakers to form “home-theater-in-a-box” solutions and are ideal solutions for first-time home theater consumers or those looking to reduce the number of devices in their home theater suite. Cirrus’ CS98200 is ideally designed for this market, as it incorporates advanced audio/video decode capabilities onto a single chip.

The DVD portable market is a relatively new growth segment in consumer entertainment. These devices allow consumers to take the DVD devices with them wherever they go, and Cirrus’ solutions leverage its expertise and leadership in the low-power portable MP3 market and are designed to provide exceptional feature support with overall reduced-power requirements for the mobile DVD market.
