Cirrus Logic Powers SONICblue’s Award-Winning Rio Riot

SONICblue Leverages World’s Fastest ARM-7 For Its First Hard Drive-Based Portable Music Player

AUSTIN, Texas - May 02, 2002 - Cirrus Logic (CRUS) today announced that its Cirrus' EP7312-90 microprocessor powers SONICblue's (SBLU) Rio Riot™ hard drive-based portable music player. The Cirrus EP7312-90 integration enables Rio Riot consumers to enjoy more high quality music with even longer battery life.

Worldwide portable compressed audio player shipments are forecasted to rise to 63.5 million units by 2006, up from 4 million units in 2001, according to IDC's "MP3 Players Move Into the Mainstream: Forecast and Analysis of the Worldwide Compressed Audio Player Market, 2001 - 2006" market forecast. IDC contends that the worldwide market value for portable compressed audio players will rise from $747 million in 2001 to $8.1 billion in 2006.

The Rio Riot is a portable music player that can store an entire music collection (more than 5,000 songs or 400 CDs) on its 20GB hard drive. Making that music collection accessible and easy to manage, the Rio Riot player integrates SONICblue's newly developed Rio LogicTrack™ user interface, the category's largest backlit display and a sleek, ergonomic design. The Rio Riot player also includes an integrated FM tuner, long-life rechargeable batteries and MoodLogic's innovative new music management software.

"SONICblue was a driving factor for us in developing the faster speed grade for the EP7312 family. They needed additional horsepower to run their advanced user interface software while maintaining a low power portable system that would offer long battery life," says Lew Paceley, vice president of marketing for the Crystal Products Division at Cirrus Logic. "With our balance of speed and on-chip integration, we have created a powerful System-on-Chip that is perfect for portable digital entertainment devices."

The EP7312-90 is the fastest ARM-720T embedded processor on the market. The superior speed and low power architecture of the EP7312-90 allows customers to differentiate their product offerings while improving overall system performance and maintaining long battery life. The highly integrated System on Chip (SoC) reduces system cost and allows SONICblue to offer a vast storage media on a portable device at an attractive consumer price point.

"Working with Cirrus Logic, we delivered a powerful, portable music player that can hold an entire music collection," said David Huffman, vice president of audio products, SONICblue. "We value Cirrus Logic's contribution to the Rio Riot project as they quickly responded to our need for a high-performance, low-power embedded processor."

The Rio Riot portable player received the highly coveted "Best of CES Tech TV" Award for Portable Audio and Video at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2002.
