Cirrus Logic Selected By Motorola Broadband As A Wireless Technology Provider For The Motorola EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer

Cirrus to supply Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless networking technology for new Motorola device that allows personal interaction with Internet content

AUSTIN, Tx., Jan. 7, 2002 -- Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) today announced that Motorola’s Broadband Communications Sector has named it a wireless technology provider for its new EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer. Whitecap™2, the Cirrus Wi-Fi certified IEEE 802.11b wireless networking technology, will be available for Motorola’s EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer, beginning in 2002. The Motorola EVr-8401 wirelessly connects to either a Motorola DCT5000 family advanced-interactive digital set-top or a stand-alone cable modem for an "always-on" high-speed broadband connection. This connection enables the EVr-8401 to offer users a second screen for accessing Internet content relating to the TV programming they are watching. Users are able to casually view content from the Internet on the EVr-8401, while they and those also in the room continue watching the TV programming -- uninterrupted and in full-screen video.

Cirrus’s Whitecap™2 network protocol was designed to meet the home-user’s wireless networking needs. For example, Whitecap™2 technology incorporates unique home-oriented benefits, including support for high-fidelity entertainment content (such as MPEG-2 video and CD-quality audio), built-in resistance from common household interferers such as microwave ovens and cordless phones, and consumer ease-of-use features.

"As the world’s largest provider of set-tops, Motorola is a significant player in the digital entertainment market. We are pleased to have been selected as a wireless connectivity technology provider for Motorola’s EVr-8401, a unique product that will help redefine the TV-viewing experience," said Amar Ghori, general manager of Cirrus Logic's Wireless Networking Division. "A key piece of the Cirrus' vision is to create connectivity solutions for digital entertainment products. The EVr-8401 gave us the opportunity to put these solutions in place."

"Cirrus' focus on easy-to-use, leading-edge home networking technology is a good fit for our EVr-8401 Enhanced TV Viewer," said Dan Moloney, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola Broadband’s IP Systems Group. "Whitecap™2 technology offers broadband network operators a strong technology option for wireless networking. Features like protocol support for quality of service (QoS) will help ensure that subscribers can enjoy streaming media without skips and pauses due to RF interference."

Wi-Fi, based on 802.11b, is the industry standard for wireless networking at 11mbps. Whitecap™2 technology includes Wi-Fi, and adds several industry-first features that differentiate it from other wireless networking solutions. Chief among these innovations is the Whitecap™2 protocol's support for quality of service (QoS). QoS allows high-bandwidth content such as MPEG-2 videos and CD-quality audio to be streamed without skips and pauses, allowing for a much more satisfactory user experience. Unlike data-only transfers, audio and video content requires the sophistication of QoS, which Whitecap™2 technology handles in the most consumer friendly way.

Cirrus wireless networking technology has built-in resistance to common household interference. Whitecap™2 uses Forward Error Correction (FEC) to thwart household noise and increase available usable throughput, and uses Channel Agility to enable the network to automatically switch to a new, jitter-free channel when interference on the first channel becomes too pervasive. Whitecap™2 technology also enables superior signal range, covering more of the house at maximum bandwidth, and performing through obstructions.

Furthermore, Whitecap™2 technology is the earliest incarnation of IEEE 802.11e wireless LAN functionality. IEEE802.11e will allow both home and business users to operate on the same standard and add multimedia functionality over simple data throughput. Significant elements of Whitecap™2's QoS enhancements have been incorporated into the 802.11e draft specification, putting Cirrus at the forefront of bringing 802.11e to market and satisfying the special needs of the home.

Cirrus’ Wireless Networking Division will be holding technology demonstrations of Whitecap™2 at the Consumer Electronics Show at booth #3439 Central Hall or Booth #11710, South Hall 3 (Wi-Fi Pavilion) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
