FREMONT, Calif. - June 22, 1998 -- Cirrus Logic Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS)

today announced that it has licensed the latest RISC core technology from ARM (Nasdaq: ARMHY), to target the rapidly growing Windows CE market. Expanding Cirrus Logic's portfolio of embedded processors, the newly licensed ARM720T and 920T cores are specifically tailored and enhanced to support Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. Already the leading supplier of ARM-based solutions, with more than 3 million units shipped over the past year, Cirrus Logic aims to combine the new ARM cores with its rich portfolio of intellectual property to create innovative Windows CE system-on-chip solutions for the communications and consumer electronics markets.

Cirrus Logic's highly integrated ARM-based chip solutions, which fully leverage the company's mixed-signal expertise, are currently at work in a wide variety of applications, including set-top boxes, smartphones, handheld digital assistants and modems. In fact, the company has secured more than 50 design wins in some of the industry's most successful mobile computing and communications devices.

ARM 920T

The ARM920T gives Cirrus Logic access to one of the industry's highest performing and lowest power consuming embedded processor cores on the market today. The ARM920T is process portable to 0.35 micron, 0.25 micron and smaller geometries and is currently capable of delivering 136 Dhrystone 2.1 VAX MIPS at 120MHz in 0.35 micron. Going forward, with its process portable architecture, the ARM920T is capable of delivering up to 220 MIPS at 200 MHz typical, while consuming only 0.5 Watts.

ARM 720T

The ARM720T enhances the low-cost, low-power advantages of the popular ARM7 microprocessor core. The ARM720T's 8 Kbyte cache and write buffer minimizes external memory access and allows the use of low-cost commodity RAM without loss of performance. This enables the system bus and external memory to operate at lower speeds than the processor, which reduces power consumption. Alternatively the free system bus bandwidth can be used for peripherals that generate high data throughput, such as MPEG decoders in a set-top box.
