LAS VEGAS - Consumer Electronics Show - January 9, 2003 - Helping digital entertainment manufacturers deliver more affordable, advanced audio features into consumer electronics products, Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), today announced a new family of highly integrated, cost-effective surround-sound CODECs. These audio solutions — the CS42516, CS42526, CS42518 and CS42528 — are designed to give OEMs a range of surround-sound CODECs that will deliver multichannel 192 kHz DVD-Audio capability, while helping manufacturers accelerate their time to market in a wide range of digital consumer electronics markets such as A/V receivers, DVD receivers, home-theater systems and other audio systems, such as automotive.
"This family of pin-compatible surround-sound CODECs gives consumer electronics manufacturers the ability to create one board design that can be scaled to provide the right mix of target features, performance and price in their products," said Terry Leeder, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "Cirrus is the world's market leader in audio solutions, and through the adoption of Cirrus' CODECs into our customers' designs they can reduce overall system component count — possibly from six parts currently to one in some cases. Through our system integration we are helping manufacturers bring advanced features such as DVD-Audio into more affordable consumer systems."
The CODECs are offered in six- and eight-channel versions, with each available in two performance categories — 109 dB and 114 dB dynamic range. All channels of the digital-to-analog converters provide digital volume control and differential analog outputs, and each device supports 192 kHz — which means consumers will be able to enjoy the improved dynamic range and multichannel capabilities of the DVD-Audio standard. Each device also is equipped with a stereo analog-to-digital converter (A/D converters) capable of independent channel gain control for single-ended or differential analog inputs.
Manufacturers can also add two more stereo A/D converters to take advantage of the variety of one-line data modes (OLM) that are supported. The devices include an integrated S/PDIF receiver that supports up to eight inputs and low-jitter clock recovery circuitry. The CODECs also provide clock management capability that allows the user to switch between the receiver PLL or external clock oscillator.
In addition, all parts have a dedicated interrupt pin that can indicate unlock, receive error, S/PDIF data format change and A/D overflow. There is also a dedicated mute output pin, and seven of the eight S/PDIF receiver pins can be used as General Purpose Output (GPO) pins configured to serve as mute outputs, S/PDIF inputs or general purpose output from the control port.
All parts are fully compatible with EIAJ CPI1201, IEC60958, SPDIF and AES3 standards. In addition, they have separate control and serial port supplies that operate from 1.8V to 5.0V, allowing the parts to match up to a DSP without the need for external level-shifting. The CS42516/26/18/28 operate from a 3V to 5V digital supply and 5V analog supply.
Pricing and Availability
The devices are available in a 64-pin LQFP package and are
currently sampling. In 10K quantities, the CS42516 is priced at
$3.93, the CS42518 is priced at $4.65, the CS42526 is priced at
$5.29 and the CS42528 is priced at $6.97.
