AUSTIN, Texas – July 12, 2004 – With an eye toward fast-growing next-generation consumer electronics markets, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) today announced a new family of high-performance, highly integrated analog and mixed-signal audio converters. This family of cutting-edge devices provides manufacturers with cost-effective, high-quality solutions for DVD recorders, digital video recorders, DVD receivers and digital televisions.
The new family of high-performance products is comprised of the CS4245 stereo CODEC, the CS5345, which is a pin-compatible analog-to-digital converter version of the CS4245, and the CS4265 stereo CODEC. Each IC features a microphone pre-amplifier, programmable gain amplifier and an analog input multiplexer that allows system designers to select from as many as six stereo pairs of analog audio.
In addition to the front-end analog integration, the CS4265 adds a S/PDIF digital audio transmitter into a very compact 32-pin QFN package. This high level of integration reduces the number of integrated circuits and passive components that are required within a typical board design — integrating as many as five chips into one. This integration results in both reduced costs and less required space on printed circuit boards compared to previous designs.
"This new family of audio converters for high-growth digital audio- and video-based products, such as DVD recorders, provides Cirrus Logic customers with a selection of cost-effective, turnkey analog IC solutions that deliver value through integration, performance and design simplification," said Carl Alberty, manager of Mixed-Signal Product Marketing, Cirrus Logic. "This combination helps our customers get their products to market faster with a lower bill of materials, but does not sacrifice the audio quality our customers have come to expect from our products."
Using an advanced multi-bit Delta-Sigma architecture, each converter IC provides 24-bit conversion and support for sample rates up to 192 kHz. The family achieves dynamic range performance of 105 dB and -95 dB THD+N. In addition, the CODECs include Cirrus Logic's patented Popguard technology to eliminate power-cycling clicks and pops, which further reduces the external components required. Other value-added features include on-chip digital de-emphasis, control output for external muting, internal digital loop-back mode and the ability to power down individual blocks of the IC. Each device can operate from a power supply of 3.3 V or 5 V and interface directly to logic levels from 1.8 V to 5 V, giving manufacturers increased flexibility in their system design.
Pricing and Availability
The CS4245, CS5345 and CS4265 are currently sampling to key Cirrus Logic customers. The CS4245 and CS5345 are available in lead-free 48-pin LQFP packages and are priced at $2.45 and $1.95, respectively, in quantities of 10,000. The CS4265 is offered in a lead-free 32-pin QFN package, priced at $3.20 in 10,000 quantities.
