Industry First: Cirrus Logic New Reference Platform and Software Turns Digital Video Recorders into 'Audio/Video Jukeboxes'

Converts CD Music Files Automatically into MP3 During Playback — Consumers No Longer Need to Sort CD Discs; Stores Photos and Video for Large-Screen Viewing of Photo Album and Personal Videos

LAS VEGAS – Consumer Electronics Show – Jan. 8, 2004 – Porting its audio expertise into the digital video market, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) has introduced a new DVD recording reference platform and software that turns a DVD recorder with an optical or hard-disk drive into a consumer-friendly “audio and video jukebox.”

Cirrus’ introduction of the audio/video jukebox and photo album features into combination digital video recording products positions Cirrus to continue to lead the market as a semiconductor and software platform supplier for both affordable and advanced-feature DVD recorders.

The audio jukebox feature, accessible from an on-screen main menu of features as part of Cirrus’ new and enhanced user-interface software, allows users to convert CD music files into MP3 files automatically during playback. Even on a small-capacity hard-disk drive, users can store hundreds of hours of content, giving them the ability to quickly access their music collections, sort songs by name or genre and create their own play lists. Users will also be able to create and name individual play lists; plus, the software will even provide album cover art.

Extending its capabilities, the Cirrus software also allows users to create and manage photo albums, using the drive’s storage capacity. Users will be able to transfer JPEG files from existing sources, such as CD or digital cameras, and transfer them to the hard drive where they can organize the files and even create slide shows without the use of a personal computer and, if desired, play music clips simultaneously.

Finally, the consumer will be able to store recorded A/V clips from a broadcast program, an optical disk containing personal videos, a digital camera or a digital camcorder. The consumer can then easily organize preferred content for viewing or seamlessly recording on a permanent optical media.

Cirrus Logic has also ported on this platform its time-shift and personal video recording (PVR) software, which enables manufacturers to provide consumers with the ability to pause, fast forward and rewind while automatically recording live television. This enables consumers to enjoy all the benefits of standard PVRs, without incurring the monthly fees charged by many PVR service providers.

“Cirrus Logic, thanks to our experience with multiple generations of DVD-based video hard-disk recorders, is in the lead on bringing elaborate audio/video jukebox, photo album and PVR features into the integrated DVD recorder market,” said Jack Guedj, vice president of Video Products Marketing, Cirrus Logic. “We expect the audio/video jukebox feature to be extremely popular with consumers, as it allows them to store digitally and easily organize their library of CDs, pictures and video clips in one location without the use of a complicated personal computer. That’s a great feature — consumers won’t have to search their homes or cars looking for their music CDs anymore.”
