Cirrus Logic Unveils Feature-Rich, Cost-Effective Digital Video Decoder Chip Solution

CS98200 Processor Offers Highly Integrated, Advanced Digital Audio and Superior Video Capabilities onto Single Chip

HONG KONG – Hong Kong Electronics Fair – October 14, 2002 – Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS) today announced the DVD market’s most multi-functional digital video decoder chip solutions, the CS98200, for the high-end DVD player, DVD receiver and digital video recording market. The CS98200 provides manufacturers of DVD products with a robust set of features in a highly integrated, cost-effective solution to help them introduce feature-rich, cost-reduced advanced home entertainment products.

“The CS98200 combines advanced digital audio capabilities, such as DVD-Audio, with advanced video capabilities in a highly integrated chipset that will help our customers introduce high-end features at mainstream prices,” said Terry Ritchie, vice president of Video Marketing, Cirrus Logic. “Its feature support is unparalleled in the industry and will help Cirrus continue to grow its position as one of the industry’s most comprehensive DVD solutions providers.”

As a testament of its abilities to power next-generation digital entertainment products, the CS98200 was the centerpiece of Cirrus Logic’s Enhanced DVD solution, recently demonstrated at the Digital Hollywood conference in Beverly Hills, Calif. Enhanced DVD, which is gaining momentum after several Hollywood studios announced their support for the technology, promises to give consumers access to Web-based content from their broadband-enabled DVD device.

The CS98200 boasts two 32-bit RISC cores that provide enough processing power—each producing 180 million instructions per second (mips) or 360 total mips—for virtually every known consumer feature today, as well as many possible features in the future. It also sports a 32-bit audio digital signal processor running at 180 mips.

Highlighting the chipset’s exemplary full-featured audio support, the CS98200 features eight-channel DVD-Audio capability that is fully compliant with DVD Forum specifications. DVD Audio is an emerging digital audio specification that promises improved sound quality and multichannel sound compared to traditional two-channel CD technology. The CS98200 also supports Dolby Pro Logic II™ and Dolby Digital, AAC, WMA and DTS™ compression standards, all with post-processing bass manager support, as well as MP3 support. The CS98200 also supports the Kodak Picture CD application.

The CS98200’s built-in second-generation progressive scan technology is designed to provide improved, sharper picture quality. A common feature on many mid- and high-tier DVD devices, Cirrus’ CS98200 solution is helping to bring this added-value feature to mainstream DVD-enabled consumer devices. Another OEM benefit that could offer added convenience to consumers is the inclusion of six 10-bit video digital-to-audio converters (DACs), which provide support for all popular video and audio output formats. Frequently, low-end semiconductor solutions offer fewer DACs, therefore making it more complicated for consumers to switch their output settings from the various incoming signals such as component, composite and S-video.

To help give consumers more direct management over their digital content, the CS98200 also provides hard disk drive support, allowing digital video recording devices to store digital content directly on the console. Using the CS98200’s audio encoding capability, manufacturers can also develop units allowing consumers to encode CD files as MP3s and store them to a hard drive, giving them simple access to music files or perhaps “jukebox” services, where the DVD device serves as a one-stop source for storing, accessing and playing digital music files.

With an eye toward the future, the CS98200 enables MPEG-4 simple profile support that will make possible for DVD devices to play content compressed in the MPEG-4 compression standard, including streaming content or content from DVD discs with MPEG-4-encoded files. The CS98200 is currently in sample production to key customers, with volume production expected in Q4 2002. Cost is U.S. $10.08 in one million unit volumes.
