Cirrus Launches Industry’s First Operational Amplifier Architecture Achieving Simultaneous Low Noise and Low Drift

Cirrus MultiPath Technology Helps Cut Design and Inventory Costs

AUSTIN, TX – October 15, 2002 – Manufacturers of data acquisition equipment can now develop precision instruments that simultaneously deliver low noise and low drift with the launch today of the CS3001 amplifier family from Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS). The CS3001 family offers customers the first single and dual operational amplifiers on the market that feature simultaneous low noise and low drift, plus exceptionally high open loop gain while operating from low voltages.

CS3001 products are ideal for signal conditioning of low frequency applications, and are designed to provide very high performance in standard industry package pin-outs to enable upgrading of current designs. CS3001 products are available immediately from Cirrus channels worldwide.

The CS3001 family utilizes MultiPath™ technology originally developed and successfully utilized by Cirrus in its CS5534 series of DC measurement analog-to-digital converters.

“The functional breakthroughs delivered in the new CS3001 family of amplifiers are made possible by Cirrus’ leadership in mixed signal IC technology,” stated Terry Leeder, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Cirrus Logic. “The new CS3001 family of products provides our customers with the lowest noise, lowest drift precision amplifiers on a simultaneous basis in the industry, and this translates to superior performance as well as immediate costs savings and faster time-to-market capabilities.”

Precision amplification of low-level signals, such as those from thermocouples to measure temperature, and from load cells to measure force (weight), require amplifiers with low noise, low drift, and high open loop gain. The CS3001 products are the first in the industry to feature simultaneous low noise (6 nV/√Hz @ 0.5 Hz with a1/f noise corner @ 0.08Hz), low drift (0.05mV/°C max), and high open loop gain. The open loop gain approaches that of an ideal operational amplifier boasting an open loop gain of 1000 trillion. The open loop gain is tested and guaranteed to be at least 10 billion minimum. The devices also exhibit excellent CMRR and PSRR and their common mode input range includes the negative supply rail. Target applications for the CS3001 family include process control, test equipment, weigh scales, and low frequency measurement equipment.

Very low frequency noise measurements require time, a long time. This noise plot required 17 hours of data collection to indicate that the CS3001 voltage noise is a low 6 nV/√Hz @ 0.5 Hz with a 1/f noise corner at 0.08 Hz.

The CS3001 sets a new standard for the op amp with the lowest noise, lowest drift.
