Cirrus Logic's MPEG Video Compression Technology Powers Daewoo Hard Disc Video Recorder

AUSTIN, Texas - April 25, 2002 -- Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS) today announced that Daewoo Electronics has selected Cirrus' CS92210 MPEG codec to power the DHD-4000K Hard Disc Video Recorder, a full-featured personal video recorder (PVR) currently shipping.

The high-quality recordability, low cost and extended storage capacity of the DHD-4000K Hard Disc Video Recorder are made possible by Cirrus Logic's CS92210 MPEG-2 video codec, a real-time MPEG-2 video encoding and decoding IC. The codec provides higher video quality than traditional variable or constant bit rate MPEG-2 encoding due to proprietary pre- and post-processing algorithms. The design win also involves Cirrus' Time Machine™ reference design, a complete audio/video record and playback platform for developing PVRs.

According to IDC's 2002 Semiconductor Market Forecast for Consumer Digital Devices, the PVR semiconductor market will grow rapidly at a compound growth rate of over 30 percent to a forecasted $1.0 billion in 2006.

"The ability to pause or instantly replay live broadcasts provides a new level of control that has proved to be extremely popular with early adopters," said Dr. Jongyong Park, chief research engineer for Daewoo Electronics' Information and Communication Division. "Cirrus Logic's CS92210 MPEG chip and Time Machine reference design have allowed us to produce a full-featured PVR that should be very attractive to our customers."

"Daewoo has used our CS92210 MPEG codec chip to produce a compelling and affordable time-shifting product that will provide consumers a whole new way of enjoying their viewing experience," said Brian Heuckroth, vice president of marketing, Optical Products Division, Cirrus Logic. "Our superior MPEG-2 technology enables Daewoo's new PVR to record more programming and at higher quality, to ensure that the consumer gets the most enjoyment for the money."
