Cirrus Logic and Metro Link Demonstrate Comprehensive Middleware Support for Home Entertainment Applications at ESC

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- March 13, 2002 -- Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) and Metro Link Inc. have collaborated to provide consumer electronics manufacturers with a comprehensive suite of middleware solutions for advanced set-top boxes and similar products based on the Harmony& reference design. Developer-ready middleware supporting streaming video, PVR, VOD, DVD, MP3 digital music, plugable EPG, Internet gateway products, set-top boxes and home networking applications will be demonstrated at the Cirrus booth (#4868 in the North Hall) at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, March 13-15.

The Harmony reference design platform enables fast development of cost-effective consumer products requiring digital audio/video MPEG recording and playback on a set-top box. Now, with Metro Link's Metro Mediaä middleware toolkit, customers can go to market with deployable solutions on Harmony. Metro Media provides integrated support for the Harmony reference design platform and optimizes its performance. Metro Link also offers custom support and professional services to Cirrus Logic customers who are developing advanced set-top boxes, PVRs, and other consumer-electronics products for the Harmony reference design.

"The Harmony solution is ideal for OEMs who wish to capitalize on the convergence wave by building custom-branded products on top of an open Linux software environment," said Brian Heuckroth, vice president of marketing for the Optical Storage Division, Cirrus Logic. "Metro Link has demonstrated first-mover advantage with their integrated middleware suite for networking entertainment and home appliances."

"Metro Media is the missing link between PVR applications and the evolution of the home media center," said Keith C. Kelly, Metro Link president and COO. "Our Metro Media toolkit offers an integrated turn-key solution which provides customers with a powerful, flexible way to offer a branded look and feel."

The multi-faceted demo features a Web pad that controls a set-top box over an 802.11b wireless network. The set-top box also talks to a residential gateway utilizing UPnP that enables X10 technology to activate a lamp. The set-top box, which houses the Harmony reference design, includes PVR, MP3 playback, Web browsing, and UPnP control point capabilities. In addition, the Web pad and the set-top box use the same GUI to replicate look and feel for ease of use. Web surfing can take place on both the Web pad and the set-top box.
