Cirrus Logic Enables Extreme Realism in Home Theater Systems With Industry’s First Single Chip DTS 96/24 Audio Processing Solution

New CS49400 Processor Brings To High Volume OEMs the Multi-Standard Decoding And 32-Bit DSP Architecture Previously Found Only In High-End Audio Systems

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Consumer Electronics Show -- January 8, 2002 -- Manufacturers of high volume audio video receivers (AVRs) and integrated home theater systems can now deliver the realism of the new DTS 96/24 audio standard to more consumers than ever with the launch today of Cirrus Logic’s (Nasdaq: CRUS) CS49400 digital signal processor (DSP). The industry’s highest performance single chip audio processing solution, the CS49400 provides extraordinary sonic realism for high volume consumer systems.

Part of Cirrus’ Total Entertainment (Total-E™) strategy to provide complete digital entertainment semiconductor solutions, the CS49400 DSP is a comprehensively integrated processor that includes a dedicated multi-standard decoder, a 516 MOPS 32-bit audio processor, key peripherals, and processor memory in a single chip that enables lower system costs. The difficult processing task required by multi-channel DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital™, AAC, and THX Ultra2 Cinema™ can be realized without the expense of any additional logic or memory.

The CS49400 features a comprehensive audio framework including customizable programming and certified software applications that enable manufacturers to quickly and cost effectively design solutions that meet worldwide compatibility standards and provide consumers with an enhanced audio experience. Included in the framework’s certified application portfolio are state-of-the-art audio decoders and sound enhancement programs, such as DTS 96/24, Dolby Digital™, AAC, and THX™.

The product’s launch is the latest in a long list of AVR milestones for Cirrus, which is recognized as the worldwide leader in AVR DSPs. Industry research firm Forward Concepts forecasts that the AVR DSP market will grow at a compounded annual rate of 49 percent in dollar terms until 2005. The firm attributes this trend in part to dramatic sound quality improvements made possible by extraordinary advances in audio technology.

"The increasing sales of large screen TV and DVD players show that consumers demand a true home theater experience," said Lew Paceley, vice president of Cirrus’ Crystal Products Division, "The difference between the theater and the home is the realism of the entertainment experience. Cirrus’ new CS49400 digital signal processor will set a new standard for sonic realism for home theater."
