AUSTIN, Texas - October 29, 2001- Cirrus Logic (Nasdaq: CRUS), the leading semiconductor company focused on consumer entertainment electronics, today announced that its wireless networking division (formerly ShareWave, Inc.) is in full production of its Bodega wireless LAN suite of products. The Bodega platform features the Whitecap2 network protocol, which is the industry's first multimedia and quality of service (QoS) enabled Wi-Fi (802.11b) certified solution. With its consumer-friendly attributes, Whitecap2 offers the best Wi-Fi solution for the home and SOHO (small office/home office) environments. In addition, products based on Whitecap2 technology will interoperate with the increasing number of Wi-Fi networks being deployed in offices and public areas such as schools, airports, and hotels.
Whitecap2 technology heralds the industry's first Wi-Fi technology developed from the ground up to meet the needs of the home, rather than just the enterprise. For example, Whitecap2 technology incorporates unique home-oriented benefits, including support for high-fidelity entertainment content (such as MPEG-2 video and CD-quality audio), built-in resistance from common household interferers such as microwave ovens and cordless phones, and consumer ease-of-use features.
"Cirrus' Whitecap2 technology is ideal for the home because it is consumer-friendly and multimedia-capable, in addition to being Wi-Fi certified, which ensures interoperability with other Wi-Fi products," said Amar Ghori, general manager of Cirrus Logic's Wireless Networking Division. "Whitecap2 technology is ideally suited to transmit the full range of high-fidelity entertainment content - video, audio, voice, and data - within the home environment. This technology also facilitates the deployment of a broad range of exciting new digital appliances and services."
"Cirrus' wireless networking technology changes how consumers interact with digital entertainment throughout the home," said Kurt Scherf, vice president of research at Parks Associates. "Cirrus' Whitecap2 technology will be a key driver in opening up home networking to consumers who are looking for complete solutions for data and multimedia applications."
The increasing penetration of broadband technology is a principal driver for wireless home networks, which extend the broadband experience to multiple computers and digital appliances anywhere in the home. As broadband services become more mainstream, Cirrus' Wi-Fi certified and multimedia-capable products can take full advantage of the new range of programming, content, and interactivity, including video- and audio-on-demand, streaming media, and high speed Internet sharing. Whitecap2 also enables a new range of wireless consumer devices such as networked set-tops, digital video recorders, residential gateways, wireless MP3 players, mobile web pads, and digital audio and video jukeboxes.
Whitecap2 is the earliest incarnation of IEEE 802.11e wireless LAN functionality. 802.11e adds multimedia and QoS support to the current IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN specification. Significant elements of Whitecap2's QoS enhancements have been incorporated into the 802.11e draft specification, putting Cirrus at the forefront of bringing 802.11e to market and satisfying the special needs of the home.
Cirrus is in full production with Whitecap2 now, and consumer products are expected to be available in the first half of 2002. Products containing Whitecap2 will be backward compatible with Whitecap1 technology, found in existing products from Panasonic and NETGEAR, as well as software upgradeable to the upcoming 802.11e standard.
The Bodega wireless LAN platform includes Cirrus' new CS22200 Series Network Controllers, which support a broad range of digital interfaces and applications, from desktop and notebook PCs to digital set-top boxes and residential gateways. The CS22200 Series includes the CS22210 Wireless PCI/USB Controller, CS22220 Wireless PCMCIA Controller, CS22230 Wireless Mini PCI Controller, CS22250 Wireless 10BT Controller, and CS22270 Wireless Multi-Link Controller.
The platform also includes Cirrus' radio reference designs - 802.11b compliant radios enabling low cost, high performance, wireless home networking products - and a broad range of system reference designs.
Cirrus will be holding technology demonstrations of Bodega at COMDEX in Las Vegas, November 12-16. Cirrus will be exhibiting in the Wi-Fi Pavilion booth #3843, as well as conducting private demonstrations at The Venetian. The company will also be demonstrating at Western Cable Show in Anaheim, November 28-30.
