New Low-Power Stereo Codec From Cirrus Offers Best Sound Playback And Recording Capabilities For Portable Electronics

TOKYO, Audio Expo 2001 - October 05, 2001 - Electronics consumers can enjoy better sound quality, longer battery life, smaller form factors and unique recording capabilities for portable entertainment systems, thanks to the launch today of Cirrus Logic¡¦s (Nasdaq: CRUS) new CS42L50 audio codec.

Continuing to deliver on its vision of digital entertainment leadership, Cirrus has created the most integrated coder/decoder available for high-volume portable entertainment devices, including MP3 and Minidisc player/recorders, digital camcorders, PDAs and other portable recording systems. This codec is the latest addition to the Cirrus Total-ETM platform solutions family, which helps drive digital entertainment innovation by enabling manufacturers to rapidly and reliably deliver next-generation audio and video products to consumer markets.

"Electronics consumers demand constant improvement in the quality and function of their portable entertainment products," said Lew Paceley, vice president of marketing for the Crystal Products Division. "Our highly integrated new stereo codec both captures and plays back the best quality sound while using very little power, making the portable entertainment experience similar to what the consumer enjoy at home."

Portable audio markets have experienced strong sales and increased growth in recent years, and industry analysts predict continued expansion in the years ahead. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, more than 32 million portable CD player units were sold last year in the United States alone. Additionally, analyst group IDC predicts that U.S. shipments of portable compressed audio players will grow by more than 43 percent from 2000 to 2005.

The CS42L50 offers a number of key features that make it the industry¡¦s best choice for portable audio codecs:

  • Sound Quality: widest dynamic range for portable codec at 96dB and lowest distortion headphone amplifier at 0.01%.
  • Integration and Size: 2:1 stereo MUX, microphone pre-amplifier, stereo A/D converter, digital gain and attenuation, bass and treble boost, dynamic range compression and limiting, stereo D/A converter, line output and headphone amplifier in a low profile 28-pin package.
