AUSTIN, Texas - June 4, 2001 - High-precision instruments that were once restricted to the lab can now be used in the field, thanks to the new, highly accurate, low-power 3-Volt analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) from Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS). The CS5540 and CS5541 allow instruments that normally require AC outlet power to now effectively run on batteries without a sacrifice in performance. The chips are targeted toward low-frequency measurement applications and include an easy-to-configure serial interface. Manufacturers of hand-held and transportable devices will find these chips ideal for low-cost, power-conscious applications.
Diverse Applications for Industrial ADCs
The new CS5540 and CS5541 provide 16-bits of true noise-free resolution at a throughput of 260Hz, and 18-bits at a throughput of 6.7Hz. They include a 2-channel multiplexer and feature a 24-bit, fourth order delta-sigma modulator which eliminates tonal interference common in second order delta-sigma modulators. Industrial applications for these chips include hand-held electronic thermometers, portable weigh scales, loop-powered instruments, and systems used to measure pressure and flow of industrial fluids, such as oil flow through a pipeline. The 3-Volt supply is ideal for industrial instruments that require a certain level of intrinsic safety, like those used in combustible chemical or gaseous environments. Medical applications include digital hospital thermometers that can take a patient's temperature in a mere five seconds, or meters that measure pH, glucose levels or blood pressure.
Pricing, Packaging & Availability
Cirrus Logic offers the new 24-bit, 2-channel CS5540 and CS5541 ADCs for $5.20 and $6.20, respectively, in quantities of 1000. Packaged in 16-pin Shrink Small Outline Packages (SSOP), the new converters are in production and evaluation boards with software are available through distributors.
