AUSTIN, TEXAS – February 26, 2001 – Personal Computer manufacturers that pre-load the Linux Operating System can now deliver high quality audio thanks to new Linux drivers for Cirrus Logic solutions. The new Linux drivers support all Cirrus Logic, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS)
computer audio solutions, including its motherboard audio chips (AC ’97), PCI-attached audio controllers, and add-in card controllers and DSP solutions. Existing systems that use CrystalClear ™ audio solutions also can be upgraded with the new drivers.
Cirrus Logic has established a strategic relationship with Red Hat, Inc., the market leader in open source solutions, to facilitate the distribution of the new drivers to both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and consumers. The Red Hat 7.x Linux software includes drivers for the Cirrus Logic® audio solutions, and the two companies have worked together to ensure the quality of the drivers for all personal computer applications. The new Linux drivers can now be downloaded from www.kernel.org, the standard open-source distribution Web site. The Linux drivers for Crystal® audio solutions are shipping today in personal computers from several major OEMs, including Dell Computer Corporation.
“We are delighted to distribute Cirrus Logic’s drivers as part of our Linux operating system,” said Andrew Bailey, Embedded Director of Engineering for Red Hat, Inc. “Cirrus Logic has worked closely with our engineering team to ensure that Red Hat Linux is an attractive solution for desktop and notebook OEMs who need robust audio support.”
“Cirrus Logic intends to provide its customers with the greatest number of options to ensure high quality audio on their PCs,” said Charlie Ashton, director of computer audio software for Cirrus Logic’s Computer Audio Division. “We will continue to support Linux through ongoing development of drivers for both current and future versions of the operating system.”
The new Linux drivers for Cirrus Logic® computer audio solutions join an established product line of Windows drivers supporting all versions of Windows, including the new Windows XP operating system, formerly code named “Whistler.”
