LAS VEGAS, COMDEX Show – November 14, 2000 – Original Equipment Manufacturers designing high-performance notebooks and docking stations can now use the new Crystal® CS4205 AC’97 CODEC with “digital-centric” architecture from Cirrus Logic, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS) to reduce the cost and complexity of their designs. This solution is the first of Crystal’s dedicated notebook CODECs and is the first AC’97 CODEC to provide an integrated Zoom Video (ZV) port providing a completely digital path for signals coming from MPEG decoders or other digital sources. The new Crystal CS4205 will be previewed this week at the Comdex 2000 Show.
The CS4205 represents a new generation of AC’97 CODECs that provide the industry’s first digital mixer and offers built-in special effects, built-in digital tone controls for treble and base, integrated ZV port, and I2S input/output all in one chip.
Cirrus Logic is also including SRS Labs’ patented algorithms to provide a natural 3-dimensional soundscape for systems using only two speakers. The SRS Labs’ algorithms provide an extremely rich 3-D effect for notebook speakers resulting in a listening experience much closer to that found in desktop systems and home stereos.
The CS4205 provides design simplicity for manufacturers interested in producing docking stations for their notebook computers. Past docking implementations required multiple analog signals to pass between the notebook computer and the docking station. The need for multiple signals increased the interconnection cost and is often responsible for degrading audio quality. The CS4205 provides a fully digital docking interface that is easy to implement and maintains the integrity of today’s high performance audio content. The “digital-centric” docking interface also allows for flexibility in the docking station design. The audio subsection of the dock can be as simple as a headphone output to a feature rich design supporting all popular audio I/O functions. This CS4205 approach allows the notebook full interchangeability between high and low end docking stations. Crystal’s unique hardware and software solution allows the end user to maintain the “look and feel” of their audio configuration whether docked or “on-the-go”.
“The CS4205 represents an important step on the evolution of AC’97 CODEC,” said Keith Essency, vice president and general manager for the Crystal Computer Audio Division. “We are extremely optimistic about its adoption by the industry. A digital-centric architecture is important to preserving signal integrity as well as design flexibility.”
