Three New Chips From Cirrus Logic Provide Energy Management For Home Appliances And Industrial Machinery

AUSTIN, Texas – November 9, 2000 – Manufacturers of white goods (home appliances) and industrial equipment can now choose from three new “energy to digital” converters from Cirrus Logic, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS) for extremely accurate energy measurement and preventive maintenance. The new converters, named the CS5460A, CS5451 and CS5471, use the same highly accurate, high performance, analog front-end (AFE) technology as their predecessor, the award winning CS5460. Utility providers and power meter manufacturers are currently using Cirrus Logic’s energy measurement technology to migrate from electro-mechanical to digital electronic power meters that enable enhanced customer service via more detailed usage data.

The new chips address other applications such as industrial power meters that require three-phase power measurement, and preventive maintenance features for industrial equipment and home appliances. The chips can detect power surges and other irregular power fluctuations before breakdowns occur, and communicate via a built-in serial interface to alert and dispatch repair technicians. By providing the exact functions the customer needs, Cirrus Logic offers cost effective, highly optimized solutions to meet any energy measurement requirement.

“During our initial market research on the CS5460 we identified applications other than power meters that needed to measure energy,” said Frank den Breejen, director of marketing for Cirrus Logic’s power management products. “Our customers came to us for solutions and we worked closely with them to define these new products.”

The new CS5460A is a pin-to-pin compatible, enhanced version of the CS5460 that offers the lowest cost, highest performance meter solution. The enhanced device can operate in standalone mode, without a microcontroller, and can be calibrated by reading information from a low-cost, external memory to maintain an accuracy of 0.1 percent. Power meter manufacturers can take advantage of the CS5460A’s increased functionality and ease of design for faster time to market.

Two additional energy measurement chips are being introduced in conjunction with the enhanced CS5460A. The CS5451 is a six-channel analog to digital converter (ADC) specifically designed for industrial energy markets, where three-phase power is widely used. The device features a serial interface for communication with a microcontroller, and is initialized and fully functional upon reset. The device also includes an on-chip voltage reference. The CS5471 is a two-channel version of the CS5451, designed for single-phase energy measurement applications.
