AUSTIN, Texas – July 24, 2000 – Cirrus Logic Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS), a leading supplier of analog and DSP solutions for entertainment applications in the Internet Age, today announced the expansion and relocation of its design center from Tokyo, Japan to Ebina City in the Kanagawa Prefecture Southwest of Tokyo. The Design Center will provide continued support for growing markets in Japan for optical and magnetic storage design cycles, and Cirrus Logic will add new audio design engineers to the team to enhance client support to certain key audio customers.
“These actions will strengthen our presence in this strategic market,” said David French, president and chief executive officer of Cirrus Logic. “By working closely with our Japanese customers, we hope to expand and grow our position as the world’s leading supplier of CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) and audio chips.”
Cirrus Logic currently is also increasing the number of engineers working on its optical storage applications in Japan. Cirrus Logic is also using this opportunity to establish a local presence for audio design applications and be closer to customers and distributors.
“The optical division welcomes the audio engineers aboard to help us increase productivity in our worldwide markets,” says Bob Dickinson, vice president and general manager of the Optical Storage Division. “Engineer-to-engineer interaction leads to better products for customers and increased support for applications designs. In addition to the new audio projects, the design center will continue to work on optical storage developments such as the recently announced Double Density endec and our single chip DVD ROM solution."
“Establishing audio design capabilities in Japan will allow us to increase our audio product offering and to specialize product development for the Japanese audio market,” says Jason Carlson, vice president and general manager for the Consumer Products Division. “We’re excited about the opportunity to leverage our Japan design talent to bolster our product development and technical product support for the audio market in Japan.”
The Japan Design Center was initially established in 1993 as Cirrus Logic K.K. in order to develop semiconductor devices for the optical storage market and has made major contributions to the development of products for the CD-ROM, CD-RW and DVD markets. Until May of this year, the design center was located within the Japan sales and marketing operation of Cirrus Logic Inc. in Shinjuku, when it was relocated to Ebina City in the Kanagawa Prefecture Southwest of Tokyo.
Takeo Wada, director of engineering and head of Japan Design Center, adds: “We are excited as the expanded design center will help bolster our growth in Japan’s market by providing the highly technical workforce a broader infrastructure and better tools which we believe will lead to effective collaboration worldwide on product development.”
The Ebina location in Tokyo was selected because of its proximity to leading Japanese customers and to a large pool of technical talent. The design center will create approximately 20 to 30 new jobs during the next three years. The design center has easy access to the airports, motorway and railway infrastructure, as well as being in close proximity to the Japanese manufacturing sites of Sony, JVC, Hitachi and Fujitsu.
