PESI Develops Family of Wireless Home Networking Products Based on Cirrus Logic’s Whitecap2 Technology

Taiwanese Design Win Accelerates Deployment and Adoption of Cirrus’ Whitecap2 802.11b (Wi-Fi) Protocol

AUSTIN, Texas – April 29, 2002 – Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), today announced that Taiwan-based Prime Electronics and Satellitics, Inc. (PESI), has developed and begun production of a family of wireless home networking products based on Cirrus’ Whitecap™2 802.11b wireless LAN (WLAN) technology. The design win extends Cirrus’ leadership position in wireless home networking, speeds time-to-market capabilities for PESI’s customers, and provides end users with revolutionary new ways to interact with digital entertainment content throughout the home. The first two products in this family are in full production and available immediately.

PESI is using Cirrus' technology to target wireless home networking applications including network interface cards, bridge/access points, residential gateways, set-top boxes, broadband modems and other mobile devices.

The Cirrus-powered PESI product family includes the WA222M Bridge Access Point and the WP222M Wireless Multimedia Card, which work together to wirelessly deliver Internet and broadband data, CD-quality audio and DVD-quality video throughout the home. The PESI product family will eventually expand to include Mini PCI and USB products based on Cirrus’ Whitecap2 technology. PESI will market the products to major consumer entertainment retail brands, broadband customer premise equipment (CPE) providers, and home networking device manufacturers, as well as to large broadband service providers.

"Whitecap2 is the only technology available capable of seamlessly transmitting high-quality audio and video entertainment throughout the home," said Eugene Yen, president of PESI. "This capability made Cirrus the obvious choice for our new family of home-entertainment wireless networking products."

PESI is a high-volume OEM/ODM contract manufacturer and mass deployer of wireless digital multimedia products for the home, small office and enterprise markets. Shipments of PESI wireless LAN products began earlier this year and have reached nearly 10,000 units per month, with shipments expected to more than double in the next quarter. PESI sells its products worldwide to customers including two major European brands, leading distributors in Singapore, China, Korea and Japan, as well as more than six major networking and PC companies in Taiwan.

Market research firm In-Stat/MDR anticipates the market for entertainment-dedicated WLAN semiconductors to grow from $4 million in 2001 to $213.3 million in 2006, representing a five-year growth rate of more than 5,000 percent.

"This design win indicates significant marketplace demand for entertainment-focused wireless home networking technology," said Allen Nogee, senior analyst, In-Stat/MDR. "Consumers are looking for ways to share and enjoy the growing spectrum of rich digital entertainment content, and Cirrus’ Whitecap2 technology provides the best solution for this purpose."

Cirrus’s Whitecap2 network protocol is the only 802.11b-based protocol specifically designed to meet the home user’s wireless networking needs. In addition to complying with industry standards (Wi-Fi™ 802.11b), Whitecap2 delivers important home-oriented features, including support for high-fidelity entertainment content, such as MPEG-2 video and CD-quality audio, built-in resistance from common household interferers such as microwave ovens and cordless phones, and consumer ease-of-use attributes.
