Cirrus Logic’s Fast Ethernet Transceiver Offers Longer-Distance, High-performance Solution

AUSTIN, Texas – February 14, 2001 – A new Fast Ethernet chip from Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS), the leader in embedded home Ethernet connections, offers equipment manufacturers high signal integrity over cable lengths as long as 160 meters, well above the industry standard of 100 meters.

As OEMs increasingly migrate to machines that communicate with other machines, such as in factories or central offices, electro-magnetic interference (EMI) causes noise levels to increase and operating conditions to become more stringent. The Crystal CS8952T combines a mix of analog and digital processing onto a single chip to deliver high performance in critical areas of noise immunity, near end crosstalk (NEXT) margin, transmitter jitter, and power and receiver performance.

“Our industrial customers need a Fast Ethernet solution that offers highly reliable performance under the most extreme conditions like high-noise, extreme temperature variances or sudden power surges,” said Jeff Luftig, product marketing manager of Cirrus Logic's communications division. “The CS8952T offers a very robust solution to meet their needs,” he added.

In settings where hundreds of components are used in a single application, signal integrity is tantamount to performance. The CS8952T addresses the issue of signal integrity with multiple features. The chip utilizes an adaptive equalizer that provides an optimal combination of line equalization, noise immunity, and NEXT rejection to maintain signal quality even over poor quality or otherwise damaged cabling. The transmit drivers on the CS8952T were specifically designed to produce a very low level of common mode noise, the source of electromagnetic interference (EMI) in network equipment utilizing twisted pair media. The CS8952T also utilizes an ultra-low jitter transmitter to extend error-free operation within the network, improving overall system performance by reducing receiver errors at the far end of the twisted pair cable.

The unique design approach of the CS8952T extends the chip's operational capabilities over long “non-ideal” wire segments that can extend up to 60 percent longer than the IEEE 802.3 specified cable length of 100 meters, which also preserves the integrity of the signal being transmitted.

Packaging, Pricing and Availability

Packaged in a 100-pin TQFP, the CS8952T is sampling now and is priced at $4.00 in quantities of 10K at commercial temperature ranges. The chip is also available in industrial temperature ranges for $5.00 in quantities of 10K. Full production will be available in June.
