New Crystal CODEC From Cirrus Logic Integrates Multiple Audio Subsystems Into One Chip

Device Includes Built-In Programmable Gain Amplifier To Reduce Implementation Costs For Manufacturers

SAN JOSE, Calif., Intel Developer’s Forum – August 22, 2000 – Cirrus Logic Inc. (NASDAQ:CRUS), the worldwide market share leader in audio ICs, today announced the Crystal® CS4201 audio CODEC, a new device that incorporates a number of cost and space-saving features such as a microphone pre-amp, Phase Locked Loop (PLL), headphone amp, and S/PDIF transmitter plus the features of a standard AC 97 CODEC all in one chip. The CS4201 is designed to provide on-board audio for motherboard manufacturers, as well as support for manufacturers of boards that follow Intel’s Communications and Network Riser (CNR) specifications. The new Crystal solution will be previewed this week at the Intel Developer Forum Fall 2000.

“This solution underlines our commitment to providing the highest level of support for Intel’s Communications and Network Riser interface specification,” said Keith Essency, vice president and general manager for the Computer Audio Products Division. “When combined with our driver technology and Microsoft’s multi-channel WAV format, the resulting product is built-in high quality sound that is an extremely high value to the consumer.”

The CS4201 eliminates the need for multiple devices that are traditionally part of the audio subsystem’s bill of materials (BOM), reducing costs for PC manufacturers. The high-performance microphone pre-amp eliminates the need for an external microphone pre-amp and offers the additional functionality of programmable gain. This low noise internal pre-amp is programmable in 10dB steps from 0-30 dB. The integrated high-performance headphone amplifier is capable of driving 32-ohm headphone loads directly and delivering up to 60mW, eliminating the need for an external headphone amplifier.

The CS4201’s analog phase locked loop (PLL) is designed to eliminate the quartz crystal from a typical design. The PLL will accept direct clocking at 14.318, 27 or 48 MHz. This analog PLL method preserves the correct operating frequency of the AC-Link so that secondary CODECs, such as those used for soft modem applications, will function correctly.

In addition, the CS4201 incorporates a built-in Sony/Philips Digital Interface (S/PDIF) to enable interconnection to high quality audio/video equipment, a high-quality, pseudo-differential CD input, and CrystalClearTM 3D Stereo Enhancement to expand the apparent sound stage of two speaker installations.

Intel’s Communications Network Riser specification allows for extremely flexible system integration. OEMs can add all manner of communications and multimedia features by simply adding appropriate “riser” cards. In a CNR environment the CS4201 has a feature that makes it truly outstanding. It includes two I2S outputs, which allow for the addition of up to two low cost stereo DACs for 4 or 6-channel audio. Competitive solutions require the use of multiple CODECs to gain the additional channels. A six-channel solution using the CS4201 CODEC and two of Crystal’s 20-bit CS4334 DACs presents considerable savings in both BOM and board space compared to alternatives requiring up to three CODECs.
