AUSTIN, Texas – June 5, 2000 -- Cirrus Logic Inc. (NASDAQ: CRUS), innovator of the award-winning 3Ci™ platform, the industry’s first integrated electronics solution for hard disk drives (HDD), today announced it is offering the new Ultra ATA/100 I/O standard as a core for integration into its second generation 3Ci™ chip, the CL-SH8670. The new CL-SH8670 integrates the microprocessor, read channel, hard disk controller and memory functions on a single chip.

Supporting the latest industry standard adopted by Intel, Quantum and major HDD manufacturers, the Ultra ATA/100 core is part of the highly integrated CL-SH8670 that increases HDD performance and reduces cost of implementation. When combined with ECC and other Cirrus Logic IP, the CH-SH8670 provides a system-on-chip solution providing not only high performance but also high data integrity.

Increasing Data Transfer Speeds

Disk drive manufacturers face increasing demand for higher capacity and faster internal data transfer rates, which will exceed the capabilities of ATA/66. As linear bit densities and HDD RPMs continue to increase, internal data transfer rates will soon exceed 66MB/s, making Ultra ATA/66 obsolete. With Cirrus Logic’s Ultra ATA/100 core, disk drive makers can increase internal data rates up to 100MB/s, paving the way for higher disk densities, especially for 7200 and 10,000 RPM ATA disk drives. Delivering high performance at affordable cost points, Cirrus Logic’s disk drive technology portfolio helps provide not only computer HDD solutions but also A/V HDD solutions for the increasingly popular PVR (personal video recorder) and set-top-box markets.

Patented Technology Enhances Performance, Eliminates Errors

The patented intelligent buffer manager of the Ultra ATA/100 core enhances performance by decreasing access times between the host and disk interfaces. Additionally, the buffer core supports high-speed SDRAM memory, with increased buffer speeds that ensure full speed host and disk data transfers.

As data transfer rates and linear densities increase, the chance for errors in reading information also increases, resulting in poor drive performance. Cirrus Logic’s patented error correction code (ECC) is a vital part of the CL-SH8670. The programmable error correction technology allows HDD manufacturers to optimize data integrity for any drive configuration. The patented ECC technology guarantees on-the-fly detection and correction of 10-error bursts per sector. Additionally, Cirrus Logic’s proprietary erasure pointer implementation increases the correction span up to 20-error bursts per sector.

Packaging, Pricing and Availability

Cirrus Logic’s Ultra ATA/100-enabled 3Ci™ HDD solution (CL-SH8670) is sampling now in a 208-pin LQFP package and is currently available for $15 each in OEM quantities. Cirrus Logic’s system-on-a-chip 3Ci™ platform is customized for individual customer specifications.
